The Municipality of Volos and the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Volos present Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, adapted for the stage and directed by Alexandros Nikolaos Balamotis. Performances run from 24 October to 29 November 2026, every Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 pm, at the “Vangelis Papathanasiou” Municipal Theatre of Volos.

 

One of the greatest novels in world literature comes to the stage through two parallel human journeys. Anna Karenina seeks a life true to her feelings, while Kostya Levin searches for something to believe in. Their paths illuminate different aspects of love, faith and the human need for self-fulfilment.

 

Based on extensive historical research into Russia in the 1870s, the stage adaptation distils the novel’s many voices and follows its constant movement between Moscow, St Petersburg and the Russian countryside. Railway stations, aristocratic mansions, ballrooms, theatres, parks, hotels and country estates form a world that changes around the characters and decisively shapes their choices.

 

This new production by the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Volos approaches the work as a deeply human story of personal responsibility and the urgent search for meaning. Shifting scenes and settings, period costumes and a large ensemble of actors and dancers bring Tolstoy’s world to life in a production that opens the 2026–2027 winter season.
